England squad denmark game

Michael Owen turned and finished coolly from close range before Emile Heskey's first-time strike crept under Sorensen on the stroke of half-time. Hopes were high after a terrific result but England were knocked out by eventual champions Brazil in their next match.

Denmark 0 England 0 - June 11, Denmark were given a route into Euro 92 through the back door after Yugoslavia's disqualification because of the country's dissolution and subsequent warfare in the region. Richard Moller Nielsen's side contained the likes of Peter Schmeichel and Brian Laudrup, and they went on to cause a major shockwave by winning the tournament after stunning favourites Germany in the final. They started their campaign with a drab goalless draw against Graham Taylor's England, denied a late winner when John Jensen's strike hit a post at the Malmo Stadion in Sweden.

Andreas Christensen is confident Denmark will be able to find a way to subdue England captain Harry Kane when the teams go head-to-head on Wednesday with a place in the European Championship final at stake. Kane has hit form in the knockout stages by following up his goal in the win over Germany at Wembley by bagging a brace in the thrashing of Ukraine in Rome, having been kept quiet in the group phase.

The Tottenham striker's prowess is obvious to Chelsea defender Christensen, who believes Denmark may have an ace up their sleeve ahead of their Wembley contest in the shape of Kane's Spurs team-mate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. He is good with his feet and he is one of the best finishers in football.

He is very big, so it is hard to get into his body, but he also has great qualities with his feet, so you should not get too close either. England have reached the semi-final stage without conceding a single goal in their five matches to date, winning four and drawing once, while Denmark have found their feet after losing their opening two group games.

While Southgate's side are favourites to progress to Sunday's final, Denmark claimed a win over England at Wembley last October in the Nations League in a contest where Harry Maguire and Reece James were both sent off. As a team, I would not say they are that much better. England will be the biggest test yet but Denmark have little to fear given Gareth Southgate's side did not even score a goal against them in two Nations League meetings earlier this season.

Hjulmand's side even won at Wembley in October. The loss of Eriksen, scorer of the winning penalty that evening, clearly robs Hjulmand of his most talented player. But the coach deserves huge credit for handling the tactics as well as the emotions in switching formation mid-tournament and making it work. Sky Sports features writer Adam Bate has the lowdown on Denmark here Raheem Sterling has been England's standout player at Euro , Harry Kane is back among the goals at the right time and has the Golden Boot in sight.

Two thirds of England's three-pronged attack that will be tasked with overcoming Denmark in the semi-finals at Euro at Wembley on Wednesday looked nailed on, but what about the third and final spot? Mason Mount, Phil Foden, Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho have all been deployed in attack so far this tournament but with Gareth Southgate notoriously keeping the nation guessing with his line-ups, don't put it past the England manager to spring another surprise.

Ahead of England's bid to reach a first major tournament final in 55 years, Sky Sports Football 's team of writers examine the options at Southgate's disposal ahead of the showdown with Denmark….

Read the selection debate in full here. Alan Smith has highlighted England's strength in depth as a potentially decisive factor against Denmark as the former England striker previews Wednesday's crunch Euro semi-final for Sky Sports.

He said: "I'm really not sure whether Southgate will make any changes or not. Germany's strength was quite obviously in their wing-backs as they showed against Portugal.

Southgate made his mark at the World Cup by employing a tactical shape built around a three-man defensive structure, the likes of which had not been consistently used by an England manager since Glenn Hoddle 20 years before.

In three of the four games since September, though, England have played with a back three. Perhaps that is down to Southgate not really trusting his central defenders, as was likely the case at the World Cup too, but the downside is that it has led to too many square pegs in round holes such as Kyle Walker at centre back and Kieran Trippier at left wing-back. Other than goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, England did not have a single left-footed starter against Belgium and it showed with makeshift wing-back Trippier frequently cutting back onto his favoured right foot when positioned in proximity to or in advance of the halfway line.

However, the left-footed Bukayo Saka could have provided an alternative in the system Southgate devised to face Belgium. Perhaps even Tyrone Mings is worth a shot at left centre back given his contrasting fortunes with Harry Maguire in the opening weeks of the campaign. Against Belgium, that was fit-again Jordan Henderson alongside Declan Rice who has virtually been a mainstay in the XI since declaring his international allegiance to England over the Republic of Ireland.

At club level, Henderson and Rice perform similar roles by regaining possession and recycling the ball with simple passes. Consequently, calls for him to start a more offensive midfielder have grown increasingly louder, as was the case on Sunday when the clamour for Jack Grealish to play reached feverish levels. Ollie Watkins misses out. James Ward-Prowse. He named Mason Greenwood withdrew with injury today. And now he is going to name England's route to the final: plot continental domination with our Predictor.

Phillips and Henderson have apparently trained okay - but it sounds like Harry Maguire might be a bit further way. Many in Spain have criticised Luis Enrique for leaving the star defender out, especially because the coach decided not to use two of the 26 spots available, with Ramos potentially benefiting the squad with his experience and leadership even if he wasn't fully fit.

We have to respect these decisions. Luis Enrique said he didn't want to pick a full complement of 26 players because some wouldn't end up being used at all. Capacity has been capped at 25 per cent, due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions, so more than 8, fans will be allowed to attend each match. Will seem like a veritable cauldron following almost a season of silence in empty stadiums in the Premier League.

Trent Alexander-Arnold arriving in training this morning to talk to Gareth If Trent Alexander-Arnold doesn't go to Euro , then England must surely be installed as odds-on favourites to win the tournament because if they can afford to omit one of their few truly world-class players, then the rest of the squad must be absolutely brilliant. That's Sky Sauces. I don't really know how to confirm that or otherwise.

I guess Gareth'll be alright for right backs whatever happens. But after James in the Euro Cup Final, it's gonna be stiff competition to get that jersey. The answer to all your questions, or more specifically question, is here. Uefa has said that teams can bring in replacements in case of Covid - so who knows, perhaps Gareth won't be the only home nation manager with some thinking to do this afternoon.

Manager Steve Clarke says that they have chosen their friendlies based on how group opponents - which of course include England - might play.

Scotland boss Clarke says "we wanted one game that would challenge us" about the upcoming friendly v the Dutch. It should be a good work out for us. Perhaps they need some warm weather prep if they go all the way in the tournament. As mentioned a week or so ago madness going overseas during a pandemic when the group games are being held on this island! Celtic were rightly slaughtered for going to Dubai.

The ScottishFA should be taken to task over this. Everyone knows that being England manager is one of the hardest jobs in the world obviously there are far tougher ones we can think of but this is the sport section so, from time to time, we say stuff like this And for our very own Jim White telling the unlucky six they won't be part of the man squad will be his toughest task.

So right now Gareth Southgate is undertaking the hardest part of the hardest job. You imagine he'll need a lie down once all his media duties are over today.

Everyone of a certain vintage remembers the reaction of Gazza when Glenn Hoddle told the midfielder he wasn't part of his World Cup '98 squad Perhaps unaware of the growing issue, the manager had made the mistake of leaving him until late on his list. An increasingly fraught Gazza decided he could wait no longer for confirmation of his immediate personal future.

And, as the manager attempted to explain that he was dropped, he smashed the place up, gashing a shin in the process. With 51 matches taking place over a month every football fan's televisual schedule from June 11 to July 11 is set. By the end of the tournament everyone will be an expert on the North Macedonian backline and the Hungarian limitations in attack.

To help you plan your footballing feast we've kindly put together this TV planner so you can get dates in your diary and ready some excuses as to why you cannot make dinner at friends you've been trying to dump for two years saying 'I'm watching North Macedonia vs Austria' isn't very British. For those of you with a bit of wall space here's a delightful, colourful Euro calendar for you to download Blu Tack not provided Fleck will now follow Spanish coronavirus rules and self-isolate at the Scots' training base in La Finca.

An SFA spokesman added: "The rest of the squad was retested for Covid and returned negative results today. Should beat any of those three Euro Predictor. If they win the group, they play the runner up in group F - which by my reckoning means Portugal, France or Germany. I'd say England start as second favourites against any of those three. It's worth winning your group, England will feel. Here are the 'host' stadiums, although with so many 'hosts' the term does feel a bit devalued.

If England do with their group, they can stay in Wembley for the R16, semis and final. Their only trip would be Italy for the quarters. Well, it wouldn't be an international tournament without one, but I have to say: Group F does look like a right pain. Poor old Hungary are the side in that who the other three will simply have to beat, but then Portugal, Germany and France are all legit contenders to win the Title. However, there's no need to cry into your vinhos verdes, your Pilsner, or your baguette just yet, continental chums: third place could well be good enough to progress.

Four of the six sides who finish third will go through to the last That is an easy one. There are 24 teams in the Euros. Weirdly, we are still calling it Euro even though, as the keen-eyed among you will already have spotted, it is the year Gareth Southgate's England squad, whomsoever that ends up being, will contest Group D. Also in that group are Scotland, Croatia and the Czech Republic. Why, I am glad you asked, robot Google overlord.

Gareth announces the England squad at 5pm on today, this sunny Wednesday the 1st of June. Ali Tweedale, once of this parish, comments on Twitter: "Quite surprised by this. I do think there's got to be some value in as much continuity in personnel from the WC, and Lingard would have provided a bit more of that. Suppose his form just tailed off too much at the end of the season. Such a shame for the lad, a really exciting talent. But it sounds like it might be the best thing for the player in the long run and, in all fairness, he was probably an outside bet to get in anyway.

Wonder who the player up for a 'fireside chat' with lovely Gareth at 5. In that sense Greenwood's withdrawal has given the England coach a helping hand, making one decision for him. By process of elimination, the most recent inclusions - Bukayo Saka, Ollie Watkins and Mason Greenwood - appeared to be the most insecure, although Southgate was given a helping hand in his decision-making with the news on Tuesday that Greenwood would not be available through injury.
